Brisbane:
World champion Olimpiada Ivanova of Russia set the first athletics world record at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, when she won the 20-kilometres walk on Thursday. Ivanova won in 1 hour, 26 minutes and 52.3 seconds, slashing the record of 1:29:36.4, set by Susana Feitor of Portugal in July this year. She collected $120,000 in the process. In other events, there were Kenyan victories in the men's mile and 5,000-metre, American Shawn Crawford won the 200-metre and Violeta Szekely of Romania won the women's mile. In the men's 5,000-metre race, though it can hardly be called that, the runners plodded for the first 4,000 and two-time Olympic silver medallist Paul Bitok of Kenya won the gold, though his time was slower than the women's 5,000-metre winner. But what's normally slow claimed the first athletics world record for the Games. World champion Ivanova won the 20-kilometres walk, slashing the previous record by a little under three minutes. Even the runner up, Yelene Nikolayeva clocked under the record. American Shawn Crawford, the world indoor champion and world outdoor bronze medallist, won the 200-metre race in a season's best 20.17 seconds and World Championships silver medallist Christopher Williams of Jamaica got the silver here as well. In the women's high jump final, world champion Hestrie Cloete of South Africa won with a leap of 2.00 metres. Romania's Violeta Szekely won the women's mile in 4 minutes and 38.03 seconds, beating Russia's Tatyana Tomashova by 1/10th of a second. In the men's mile, Olympic champion Noah Ngeny of Kenya burst into the lead coming off the final turn, then held off Canada's Kevin Sullivan to win in 3 minutes and 56.1 seconds.Topics mentioned in this article
