A new national open mark by UP's Promod Kumar Tiwari (Hammer throw), Sanjay Kumar Rai of Railways and Pritipal Singh of Police (both in triple jump) and Soma Biswas of Railways (Heptathlon) marked the concluding day of the 41st National Athletic Championship here today. The championship also witnessed a grand golden double by Anil Kumar (Services) and Kavitha Pandya (Rlys). Railways continued to dominate the track and field events and collected the overall titles securing 148 points in men's and 176 pts in women's sections. Services (107 pts) and Tamil Nadu (66 points) finished runners-up in women. Tiwari, proved to be the only athlete to improve his own marks in successive meets. He had set a new mark in the Lucknow inter-state championship last month surpassing Virender Poonia's mark of 67.41m with a throw of 68.98m. In the finals today, Tiwari started with a foul and then touched the hammer at 68.82m in his next attempt. He then created new meet record by clearing a distance of 70.05m. Virendar Poonia of Railways (62.40m) and Nirbhav Singh of Services (62.11m) collected the silver and bronze respectively. Sanjay Kumar Rai won the triple jump with a new meet mark jumping a distance of 16.23m in his fifth try while Policeman Pritpal Singh bettered the earlier mark recording 16.02m. The fastest man in the country, Anil Kumar, who won the 100m dash yesterday, grabbed the gold in 200m today with a timing of 21.20 secs, which is below his own marks. His best so far has been 20.73 secs set in national circuit meet in Bangalore during July last year. Anand Menezes (Rlys) and Ajay Raj Singh (Police) came second and third respectively. In the 200m women, Kavitha Pandya was a clear winner clocking 24.28 secs. Picking up speed in the last 80 metres, Pandya surged ahead and never looked back.
