Boston:
Regina Jacobs became the first woman to break four minutes in the indoor 1,500 metres, upstaging the successful return of Olympic champions Maurice Greene and Stacy Dragila in the Boston Indoor Games. Jacobs finished in 3 minutes, 59.98 seconds yesterday to break the 13-year-old world record of 4:00.27 set by Romanian Doina Melinte on February 9, 1990. Mary Slaney held the American record of 4:00.80 for 23 years. "I had 16 weeks of the best training ever, and I knew it was possible, but you never know," said Jacobs, 39, the 1995 world champion and a four-time Olympic qualifier. "You have to set it up and hope that the running gods are smiling on you". Dragila, the Olympic champion in the women's pole vault, cleared 4.71 metres for an American record. Dragila missed in three tries at 4.76 metres in a bid to break Russian Svetlana Feofanova's world record of 4.75 metres. Greene finished in 6.52 seconds - short of his world record of 6.39 but enough to beat the 6.56 by Jon Drummond, his training partner and teammate on the 2000 Olympics gold medal-winning 400 relay team.
