New Delhi:
Discus thrower Neelam Jaswant Singh has filed an appeal in the Court of Arbitration of Sports, challenging the verdict by an AFI panel that found her guilty of doping during the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki last year. "We sent our Letter of Intent along with the Statement of Appeal to the CAS headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday and are now waiting to hear from them," Neelam's counsel Sushil Salwan said on Saturday. The appeal was expected to be filed by May 24 but several factors contributed to it getting delayed, Salwan said. "Neelam, who was abroad, arrived here late while I was also unwell for a few days," the lawyer said. The athlete had time till tomorrow to file her appeal against the decision of the four-member panel headed by Tamil Nadu Athletics Association President Walter Dawaram. The other three members were former athletes Adille Sumariwala and G S Randhawa and Delhi Medical Association Secretary Girish Tyagi. They upheld the two-year provisional ban imposed on Neelam by world governing body IAAF for testing positive for pemoline at the championships in August. According to the CAS regulations, the court will now ask for relevant documents before moving ahead in the case. After going through those, the arbitrators will decide whether to issue a notice to the other party and fix a date for the hearing. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
