Five national records were shattered and two meet records tumbled as North Zone became overall champions on the final day of the 14th national inter-zonal athletic championships today. A Arvind of South Zone scripted a new national record in under-18 boys category by clocking 10.87 seconds in 100m, bettering the previous record of 10.9 seconds. In the boys' under-18 category, K Shankar of South Zone created a new mark by scoring 6208 points in heptathlon at the Salt Lake stadium. The girls under-16 section saw Aplesh Yadav of North Zone throwing the shot put upto 11.53m bettering the previous national best of 11.05m. Deepa Chaudhury of North Zone tumbled the national record by touching 2.80m in pole vault event in girls' under-20 category. In boys under-16 category, Budhuram Singh of East Zone created new national record of 7.04m in long jump. North Zone became the overall champion with 607 points followed by South Zone with 587 points. East and West Zones finished with 558 points and 238 points, respectively. In the boys category, North Zone topped the table with 380 points followed by South Zone with 297 points. In the girls category, on the other hand, East Zone emerged champions with 324 points while South Zone finished second with 290 points. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
