Melbourne:
World record-holder Asafa Powell returned to the track for the first time in seven months on Thursday. He won the 100 meters in a time of 10.29 seconds at an IAAF World Tour event, well outside his 9.77 world mark. Darrel Brown of Trinidad was second in 10.34 among a number of athletes tuning up for the Commonwealth Games. Joshua Ross of Australia was third in 10.41. James Godday of Nigeria took the 400 meters in 45.65 seconds, followed by Ato Modibo of Trinidad in 45.72. Kenyan Cosmas Rono won the 800 meters in 1:46.81, followed by Gary Reed of Canada. "I was quite nervous out there," said Powell, who suffered a groin injury seven months ago in London. Keeping his cool Powell broke the 100-meter world record by one hundredth of a second at a meet in Athens last year, and he also posted nine sub-10 second times during the 2005 season. But Powell has yet to win a major international competition after finishing a disappointing fifth at the Athens Olympics -- a result he is looking to reverse at the Commonwealth Games. A delayed false start, which wasn't called until the sprinters had hit the 40-meter mark, appeared to unsettle a few of the contenders. But Powell kept his cool to repeat his lightning start the second time around. "I'm quite happy that I got it over with. It's over and done with so I can look forward to the Commonwealth Games now," he said. The Melbourne meet is one of 12 Grand Prix meets in the second tier of the new World Athletics Tour. The top group comprises six IAAF Golden League and six Super Grand Prix meets and culminates with the 4th World Athletics Final at Stuttgart. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
