New Delhi/Kottayam:
Despite gusty wind and the freezing conditions, Anju Bobby George leaped her season's best at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki yesterday. However, her fifth-place finish in the final is as much a disappointment for her family as it is for fans. As Anju started the defence of her World Championship bronze medal, her family and friends in Kottayam were closely monitoring the local news channels for updates on her performance. Her mother was too tense to even watch. The news wasn't quite what they might have wanted to hear, but K T Markose was ever the supportive father. "As far as the event is concerned, at 6.66 meters it was her best jump this season. But we are not that unhappy. The least we expected was for her to come third," he said. Anju was in medal contention through the first three rounds. Her first jump measured 6.66 metres, a personal season's best, but the slide began after that and included a foul in her fifth attempt. The weather could not have helped matters at all. A gusty wind, steady rains and the freezing cold all making for difficult jumping conditions. And while she may not have been able to win India another world championship medal, her family is sure she is capable of bigger and better things. "Keeping in view her performance, she can always comeback. We are hopeful that she will come out of this bad patch and do well," said he r father. Anju returns to India almost immediately and there will be enough time for a brief reunion for the family before she gets ready for the Asian championships in Korea next month.Topics mentioned in this article
