Maurice Greene is ready to run on the 400-meter relay team at the world athletics championships. Greene, who has three world titles in the 100, hurt his left hamstring at the US championships in June, costing him a spot in the field for the meet. Despite the injury, Greene was added to the pool for the relay team, in part because his coach, John Smith, is head of the world men's team. He said his hamstring feels better and is practicing for the relay, planning to participate in each heat. Though the meet starts Saturday, qualifying for the relay begins August 12, two days before the competition ends. Next world championships Smith was noncommittal about who would run on the relay during a news conference earlier this week. But Greene said he would run No. 2 on the relay, with Leonard Scott leading off, Shawn Crawford going third and Olympic champion Justin Gatlin running the anchor. Despite the chance to add a sixth world medal, 31-year-old Greene clearly wishes he had a chance to run in the 100 and wants to keep running through 2007. Greene decided to re-evaluate his future goals after the injury. That is why he wants to race until the next world championships in two years in Osaka, Japan. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
