Athens:
Scotching the speculation that shot putter Bahadur Singh had also failed a drug test, India's deputy chef-de-mission for the Olympic Games Harish Sharma today asserted that except for the two women weightlifters, all the rest of the contingent was clean. "No other athlete except Pratima Kumari and Sanamacha Chanu have tested positive for any banned drug so far," said Sharma. Bahadur Singh, who cut a sorry figure in the competitions on Wednesday failing to register even a single legitimate throw, was widely speculated to have tested positive for a banned drug. On Chanu's failed test, Sharma said the lifter had tested positive for furosemide, a weight-reducing diuretic. "She appeared before the International Olympic Committee anti-doping commission last evening along with secretary of the contingent K Jothikumaran and Dr Sangla. They have put forth her case and have requested the commission to conduct a test on her 'B' sample," Sharma said. As per the rules, Chanu was sent back home on Thursday itself. The rest of the three lifters, including Sydney Games bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari, have also returned. Sharma said shooters Suma Shirur and Abhinav Bindra have also returned while silver medallist Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is set to return home today. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
