Brussles:
Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva set a second world record at the Brussels Golden League meeting on Friday. She broke her own mark of 4.91 meters set at the Athens Olympics. The Russian jumped 4.92 meters in her third attempt. This is her seventh world record of the year and ninth of her career. The 22-year-old broke into frenzied celebration afterwards. Meanwhile, World Champion Saif Saeed Shaheen set a world record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase smashing Moroccan Brahim Boulami's three-year-old world record by 1.65 seconds. Shaheen was kept out of the Olympics because of his recent nationality switch from native Kenya. Bahamas' Tonique Williams-Darling looked more than impressive finishing the 400 meters in 49.59 seconds. The Athens Olympic champion beat world champion Ana Guevara of Mexico for the fourth time this year. Losing out However, there was a tragic end to Felix Sanchez's 36 finals winning streak and his hopes of the golden league jackpot. He pulled out of the 400m on the penultimate bend. Sanchez had won the Olympic 400m Hurdles title last week in Athens. Athens silver medallist Hestrie Cloete, was another Jackpot contender to lose. She was outclassed for the second time in one week, by the Olympic High Jump champion Yelena Slesarenko, who cleared 2 meters. Men's Olympic and world triple jump champion Christian Olsson of Sweden, however, did manage a win, and now, he and Williams Darling are the only two athletes on target for the golden league big prize.Topics mentioned in this article
