Gopi in main draw of Denmark Open
Former All England champion Pullela Gopichand enters the main draw of the Denmark Open badminton tournament along with Chetan Anand and Arvind Bhat.

Former All England champion Pullela Gopichand entered the main draw of the Denmark Open badminton tournament along with Chetan Anand and Arvind Bhat. Gopichand overcame a stiff challenge from local boy Joachim Fischer 15-10 17-16 in the final qualifying round yesterday after defeating Antti Kolkonen of Finland 15-11 15-10 in an earlier round. He now plays Yu Chen of China in the first round. In other matches, Anand thrashed Denmark's Peter Mikkelsen 15-4 15-8 while Arvind Bhat beat Claran Darcy of Ireland 15-6 15-9 to make it to the main draw. Anand will now take on Jens Roch of Germany while Bhat will face off with Sairul Amar Ayob of Malaysia. In the women's qualifying matches, top Indian shuttler Aparna Popat gave a walk over to Shao-Chin Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the second round after winning the first against Kennie Asuncion of Philippines 11-2 11-9. National Champion Abhinn Shyma Gupta and south-paw Nikhil Kanetkar have been given direct entry into the championship. Gupta plays fifth seed Soni Dwi Kuncora of Indonesia in the first round while Kanetkar will take on Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
