Uber Cup: Malaysian women down Indonesia
Malaysian women clinched a 3-2 victory over Indonesia in a cliffhanger contest of the Uber Cup Asian Zone qualifiers on Thursday.

Malaysian women clinched a 3-2 victory over Indonesia in a cliffhanger contest of the Uber Cup Asian Zone qualifiers on Thursday. Wong Mew Choo provided Malaysia a sound start in the Group Y encounter by defeating Fransisca Ratnasari 21-11, 21-6. Norshaliza Bahurum extended the lead by downing Maria Kristin Yulianti 21-14, 10-21, 21-19. Adriyanti Firdasari brought Indonesia back into the contest by winning the third singles 22-11, 22-20 against Anita Raj Kaur. Doubles games Malaysia's doubles pair of Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui clinched the match by defeating Jo Novita and Lita Nurlita 21-16, 21-17. Indonesia's Greysa Polii and Lilyana Natsir won the second doubles 21-15, 21-11 against Ooi Sock Ai and Fong Chew Yen. Indonesia's fortunes have slumped since the 5-0 win in its first outing on Wednesday. The loss to Malaysia was its second after a 5-0 drubbing by South Korea in the preliminary league. New hopes South Korea stayed in contention for a place in the Uber Cup finals by defeating Taiwan 3-2. Malaysia gave a 5-0 drubbing to Iran, which was also blanked 5-0 by Taiwan. Singapore's women opened up a window of opportunity by carving out a 3-2 win over Thailand, which had earlier blanked Pakistan 5-0 in Uber Cup's Group Z. Hong Kong also posted a 3-2 victory over India, which later spiked the challenge of Pakistan 5-0. Four teams from this Asian competition will qualify for the Uber Cup finals in April-May. Men's qualifiers In men's Thomas Cup Asian zone qualifiers, former champion Malaysia and Thailand scored resounding wins to stay on course for advancing to the finals in Japan. Malaysia drubbed Nepal 5-0 in Group A and Thailand outplayed Vietnam 4-1 in Group B. India registered a 4-1 Group C victory against Singapore, which was earlier beaten 3-2 by Hong Kong.
