Uber Cup: Saina Nehwal & Co. Rout Canada 5-0 in Opener

Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and the doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Jwala Gutta gave India an unassailable 3-0 lead before PC Thulasi and another doubles pair of Pradnya Gadre and N Siki Reddy made it 5-0.

New Delhi: Indian women shuttlers got off to a fantastic start by clean-sweeping their Uber Cup opener 5-0 against Canada but the men dismally lost their Thomas Cup tie 1-4 to Malaysia on the first day of the prestigious tournaments at the Siri Fort Sports Complex at New Delhi on Sunday.

With the help of Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and the pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, India took an unassailable 3-0 lead over Canada in the tournament opener.

Skipper Saina thrashed her World No.218 opponent Joycelyn Ko 21-4, 21-12 in the first singles followed by World Championship bronze medallist Sindhu's easy 21-16, 21-3 win over Rachael Honderich in the second singles.
