New Delhi:
The 'king of the ring' Services gained a psychological edge over traditional rivals Railways when their two-time national champion Satish Ghangas prevailed over Durjai Shastri to make it to the last eight along with favourite Dingko Singh in the 48th Senior National Championship here today. Among the second day's 92 bouts, the lone upset was that of former junior national champion A Kamesh of Services, who was listless during his flyweight category contest and finally surrendered meekly to the under-dog Sundi Raju of Andhra Pradesh 9-26. In what was billed as the 'clash of the titans', International Ghangas and former national runners-up Shastri seemed to follow 'attack is the best form of defence' policy as they indulged in a rapid exchange of blows. The screaming spectators were treated to an adrenalin overflow as Ghangas' trademark straight punches and Shastri's piercing right hooks found their targets and startled each other. Ghangas finally clinched the keen light middleweight tussle 30-28 after four rounds of heavy pounding. In the featherweight category Asian Games gold medallist Dingko Singh (Ser) made light work of Tamil Nadu's D Shrinivasan 14-1, even as All India Police's Zothan Mawia knocked-out Gadinarayan Chipula of Railways in the very first round of a lightweight category clash. Seven-time national Champion Lalit Prasad of Railways blew away the challenge from Karnataka's Pullam Venkatesh when the referee stopped their middleweight category contest in the first round itself.
