New Delhi:
The Women's world boxing championships began in New Delhi on Saturday. Featuring 180 boxers from 32 countries, the championships are historic for more reasons than one. "This is the first time a world championship is being held in any discipline here in India," said Col P K M Raja, Secretary General, Indian Amateur Boxing Federation. "This is important for India since they will now try and get it into the Commonwealth Games, and for the other countries similarly they will try and get it in the Mediterranean Games. So the tournament is a stepping stone of sorts," said Caner Donegli, General Secretary, Amateur International Boxing Association. The undoubted stars of the show will be the Russians, who rule the sport in the women's section. They bagged seven medals on home turf at the last World championships, and will participate in all 13 weight categories this time around. They do, however, have a healthy respect for their hosts and rivals. "The tactics and techniques of the Indians and Hungarians are the same. They are very skilled and have improved, the left and right jobs are the same of the boxers of India and Hungary," said Maria Kovacs, 86 kg Gold Medalist, 2005 World Championships. India won just one gold from each of the two previous editions, thanks entirely to the efforts of M C Marykom. But more than the silverware, it will be the exposure and the experience of hosting a tournament of this scale and magnitude that should stand the players and administrators in good stead, in the coming few years.Topics mentioned in this article
