New Delhi:
After coming it seventh at the last Olympics and eleventh at the last World Cup, the Doha Asiad saw a new low in the history of Indian hockey. The Indian team failed to make it to the semi-finals for the first time ever in an Asian Games. The Asiad failure prompted the former hockey Olympians to stage a rally in the capital on Wednesday, protesting against the way the sport is run in the country. The memorandum seemed to be quite clear in its tone, as the former hockey greats, who had come together under the banner of the hockey lovers association, wanted KPS Gill to resign. The hope that perhaps could kick start a change in the system. "This fight is not against one particular person, it's against the system. It is all for the prestige of the nation. We should address these problems for the betterment of the hockey," said Ashok Kumar, Former Hockey Olympian. Change doubtful But what needs to be seen is whether processions like the one on Wednesday will actually bring about any sort of administrative changes in the IHF. For that to happen, Gill has to go. But that seems unlikely given that the super cop has been in-charge of Indian hockey for more than 12 years. Currently he's facing a court case from within the Indian Hockey Federation, and some of the members are trying desperately to oust him. "I can vouch for the fact that there is absolutely no transparency and I have documents to prove them," said Dr Gurpreet Singh Jt Secretary, Indian Hockey Federation. The memorandum, meanwhile, was meant to be handed over to the sports minister and to the IOA President Suresh Kalmadi. But since neither turned up, they were handed over to the police instead. No doubt Mr Gill will soon have something to say, but don't expect it to sound anything like a resignation.Topics mentioned in this article
