New York:
Polish heavyweight Andrew Golota returns to the boxing ring in mid-April, to take on IBF heavyweight champ Chris Byrd, promoter Don King announced in New York. The Golota bout is the main event on a fight card that also includes heavyweight John Ruiz and Puerto Rican sensation Felix Trinidad, who is coming out of retirement. Heavyweight fighter Andrew Golota returned to New York, the site of a highly controversial fight he had eight years ago. On July 11, 1996, low punches by Golota resulted in his disqualification from a fight against Riddick Bowe, which led to fans inside the Madison Square Garden rioting. Golota is now set to meet IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd at Madison Square Garden in New York on April 17. That fight will be the main event on a fight card which includes several other well known boxers. Golota was born in Poland and lives in Chicago, a city with a very large Polish population. His record in the ring is 38 wins and four defeats with 31 knockouts. In Chris Byrd (37-2, 20 KOs), he faces a fighter who defeated Evander Holyfield and Fres Oquendo in his last two bouts. Golota has a history of crude tactics in the ring, but the always talkative and colorful promoter Don King says that he will see to it that his fighter avoids low blows when he faces Byrd.
