Chennai Super Kings defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad at MS Dhoni's home ground in Ranchi by 12 runs in match 10 of the Champions League Twenty20. Catch the match as it happened here (Scorecentre | Commentary):
23:54 (IST): A good effort by Hyderabad but they end up woefully short. Sunrisers finish off at 190/7 and Chennai's 12-run victory to top the talbe with two wins from as many games.
23:46 (IST): 2 quick wickets for Chennai as Holder removes Karan Sharma and dangerman Darren Sammy. Sammy falls after a brisk 50 off 25 balls. (Hyderabad 175/7 in 18.3 overs; Target: 203)
23:41 (IST): Chennai getting a little sloppy in the field with the likes of Raina and Hussey dropping relatively simple catches. Intersting to see if these drops are costly. (Hyderabad 168/5 in 18 overs; Target: 203)
23:32 (IST): Darren Sammy determined not to go down without a fight as he looks to take the game down to the wire. Chennai cannot relax while he's still at the crease. (Hyderabad 156/5 in 17 overs; Target: 203)
23:21 (IST): Ashish Reddy goes trying to hit a big one. Hyderabad continue to lose wickets as Chennai keep on sticking to the basics as they push for victory. (Hyderabad 137/5 in 15.1 overs; Target: 203)
23:11 (IST): Perera falls and that could be the final nail in the Sunrisers' coffin as Chennai begin to tighten the screws on this game. Now all hope lies with Darren Sammy. (Hyderabad 107/4 in 13.1 overs; Target: 203)
22:59 (IST): Shikhar Dhawan too departs and now it seems Hyderabad's chances have been severely dented. Chennai have a foot in the door. (Hyderabad 92/3 in 11 overs; Target: 203)
WICKET! Suresh Raina, you beauty! The part-time offie cleans up JP Duminy for 0. Hyderabad stutter at 90/2 in 10 overs, 113 more required to win.
WICKET! Suresh Raina does it for Chennai as soon as he is brought on to bowl, albeit with a run-out. Parthiv Patel (38 off 28) called and sent back by Dhawan, ball went to cover. Raina runs hard and throws the stumps down at the non-striker's end. Sunrisers 88/1, need 115 more to win.
22:45(IST): Another reprieve for Sunrisers! It is Hyderabad's day it seems as Jason Holder bowls a short one and Parthiv Patel, the instinctive puller, is easily gobbled up by Mohit Sharma at fine leg. Umpire checks with third ump and is called a no-ball as Holder already had bowled one. A four off the next ball means 'chilli' in Chennai's wounds now. 87/0 in 9 overs, Dhawan on 46 off 28, Parthiv 37 off 27. Need 116 in 11 overs.
22:36(IST): What a reprieve for Sunrisers! Shikhar Dhawan dropped by Jason Holder off Albie Morkel, probably losing the ball in the background. Michael Hussey absolutely dumbfound. He was on 41. Parthiv Patel knocks a four off the very next ball and another one off the fifth ball, to rub the 'usual' salt into his wounds. Hyderabad going great guns in the daunting chase, at 75/0 after 8 overs, need 128 to win in 12 overs.
22:28 (IST): Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan are piercing the gaps well and putting together a good partnership at the top of the order. Chennai need a quick wicket. (Hyderabad 52/0 in 5.3 overs; Target: 203)
22:16 (IST): Hyderabad showing the right intent as they push forward in the early overs. Parthib and Dhawan know that the key is to go sfter the bowlers right from the start. (Hyderabad 26/0 in 3 overs; Target: 203)
22:03 (IST): The Hyderabad openers begin their task of chasing down the traget of 203 in 20 overs. Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan have to make the most of the fielding restrictions if they are to give Chennai a good run for their money. (Hyderabad 5/0 in 0.2 overs; Target: 203)
21:50 (IST): So a good finish for Chennai. 76 runs coming in the last 5 overs to take their total to 202/4. MS Dhoni remains unbeaten on 63 off just 19 balls. A tough chase in store for Hyderabad but they do have the batting firepower to respond to Chennai's total.
21:45 (IST): MS Dhoni reaches his 50 off 16 balls, the fastest fifty in the Champions League T20. (Chennai 186/4 in 19.2 overs)
21:40 (IST): Raina falls for a brilliant knock of 84 but not before MS Dhoni smashed 34 runs in the 18th over off Thisara Perera. Chennai now set to post a huge total in Ranchi. (Chennai 175/4 in 18.2 overs)
21:26 (IST): Suresh Raina has MS Dhoni for company and in this format the pair are capable of demolishing an attack in the death overs. Hyderabad have their task cut out towards the end of the innings. Dale Steyn putting in a good effort as he tries to stem the flow of runs. (Chennai 141/3 in 17 overs)
21:14 (IST): Badrinath is caught in the deep by Steyn off Duminy as he tries to clear the ground. A wicket for Hyderabad but Chennai going big in the last few overs. (Chennai 115/3 in 14.1 overs)
21:05 (IST): Suresh Raina reaches his fifty off just 38 balls. Chennai are now looking to go big in the death overs as Hyderabad's bowlers have no answer to the onslaught. (Chennai 93/2 in 12.4 overs)
20:55 (IST): For Chennai it is crucial that Suresh Raina bats right through to the end of the innings. This game is important for both sides as the winner takes the top position in the points table. (Chennai 83/2 in 11.4 overs)
20:48 (IST): The supersoppers are at work as the groundstaff struggles to wipe off the due from the outfield. As stated earlier, the dew factor could be crucial in this game. (Chennai 69/2 in 10 overs)
20:41 (IST): Suresh Raina has got a start and is looking set for a good score. He will be looking to continue where he left off in the game against Titans. (Chennai 61/2 in 9 overs)
20:33 (IST): The wicket that Hyderabad were looking for! Hussey is caught behind off JP Duminy. Hyderabad now have a chance to claw back into the game. A chance to put pressure on the new batsman and get in a few quiet overs in the middle stages of the innings. (Chennai 45/2 in 6.2 overs)
20:27 (IST): That is the first six of the innings! Ishant Sharma is dispatched into the crowd by Michael Hussey (Chennai 38/1 in 5.4 overs)
20:18 (IST): Hyderabad's opening bowlers Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma bowling a tight line and the pressure seems to be getting to the batsmen as they try to score freely. (Chennai 23/1 in 3.5 overs)
20:13 (IST): Chennai's hopes now rest on Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina. These two are known to fire under pressure and it will be interesting to see if they can deliver the goods. (Chennai 13/1 in 2.5 overs)
20:05 (IST): First blood to Hyderabad! Dale Steyn strikes in the first over as he removes Murali Vijay for a golden duck. Chennai's hopes of a good start go down the drain. (Chennai 0/1 in 0.2 overs)
19:58 (IST): Hyderabad built a reputation by bowling out sides cheaply during IPL 2013. With the likes of Dale Steyn in their ranks, expect them to come hard at the Chennai batsmen in the early overs.
19:52 (IST): Chennai shall be banking on their openers to give them a good start. They will hope to make full use of the fielding restrictions in the first 6 overs and build a platform for their excellent middle order.
19:44 (IST): Hyderabad Shikhar Dhawan justifies his reason for bowling first. "We'll bowl because there will be dew later on, which will be hard for the bowlers. It will give us an advantage. The qualifiers helped a lot as it helped the team gel together and playing three matches went good for us. CSK are one of the best teams and we want to win this game," he says.
MS Dhoni backs him by adding that he too would have fielded first because of the due. "I would have fielded because of dew as it was in the last match here. There's not much pressure playing on my home ground because when you are a part of the Indian team, every ground is a home town for you because of the love and affection. Now with an international stadium here, I can spend some time here. We got a fantastic start in the first match, most of our players didn't get much practice earlier because of rains. Our bowlers did a good job with the wet ball and Suresh Raina and Hussey battle very well. I just changed my hairstyle because my hairdresser was in town so I just sat on the chair and have never seen the mirror again," he maintained.
So the due is expected to be a big factor though after every 10 overs supersoppers will be used to dry the outfield.
19:36 (IST): So the teams are as follows:
Chennai (Playing XI): Michael Hussey, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, S Badrinath, Dwayne Bravo, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Albie Morkel, Jason Holder, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohit Sharma
Hyderabad (Playing XI): Parthiv Patel(w), Shikhar Dhawan(c), Jean-Paul Duminy, Hanuma Vihari, Thisara Perera, Darren Sammy, Ashish Reddy, Karan Sharma, Amit Mishra, Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma
19:32 (IST): Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Shikhar Dhawan opts to bowl first against Chennai Super Kings. Both teams looking set for an exciting encounter. The crowd is building up. Both Chennai and Hyderabad go in with unchanged teams.
19:19 (IST): It shall be intersting to see what playing XI the two teams use. The squads are as follows:
Chennai Super Kings - MS Dhoni (captain), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, DJ Bravo, F du Plessis, JO Holder, MEK Hussey, Imtiaz Ahmed, RA Jadeja, JA Morkel, CH Morris, SK Raina, WP Saha, MM Sharma, M Vijay.
Sunrisers Hyderabad - S Dhawan (captain), Anand Rajan, A Ashish Reddy, JP Duminy, A Mishra, PA Patel, NLTC Perera, BB Samantray, DJG Sammy, I Sharma, KV Sharma, DW Steyn, GH Vihari, CL White
19:13 (IST): The pitch is expected to be a belter like last time. When Chennai faced Titans, even a target as daunting as 186 was chased with relative ease. So no total is bound to be a safe score on this wicket.
18:52 (IST): Against Hyderabad, Chennai will have to face the significant threat of Dale Steyn. The battle between Steyn and Hussey, and indeed the rest of the Chennai's batting wealth, is sure to be a sight to watch, although Steyn was far from his commanding best against T&T. He dismissed Lendl Simmons with the very first ball of the day, but was then taken for 41 runs. A player of his quality doesn't make a habit of poor performances though, and Chennai will hope he doesn't come good against them.
18:46 (IST): Chennai will be pleased with how their batting came good in the victory over Titans. Chasing a massive 186, an 89-run second-wicket stand between Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina set the foundation, with 65 amassed in the first five overs. Without much of a need to hurry, Dwayne Bravo and S Badrinath took them closer to victory with a stand of 58, and despite a slightly worrying mini-implosion towards the end, where Chennai lost three wickets for 11, they managed to cross the line.
18:39 (IST): With the chance of rain affecting this game, both teams will be hoping for clear skies when they take the field.
It wouldn't be too accurate to call it a derby, but when Chennai Super Kings take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Thursday (September 26) in a Champions League Twenty20 2013 encounter, there will be a semblance of an Indian derby. Both teams have momentum gained from victories, both have capable match-winners and in-form players, and with the top spot in Group B there for the taking, both would be keen to take a giant stride towards qualification.
Given that they are based in Ranchi, Chennai hold a bit of an advantage. Following their four-wicket win against Titans on Sunday, they've had time to put up their feet, take a nap, and recover from any strain sustained during that match. Hyderabad, meanwhile, played Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday in Mohali, winning by four wickets, and then made the trip to Ranchi the following day. They opted to have optional practice on the eve of the match, while Chennai went through a full net session.
