Leon, Spain:
Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand drew against Braingames match winner Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in the first two games of the Advance Chess match that got underway here today. Playing black in the opening game, Anand played lively chess throughout and kept Kramnik under pressure before the game was agreed drawn. It was a trademark Orthodox Queen Pawn game by Kramnik that failed to yield anything substantial. Soon after the opening moves got over Anand started a brilliant manoeuvre to seize the initiative and was in fact fighting for an advantage by the 16th move itself that attested to his supremacy of being the best player in the Advance Chess format. The Indian ace trapped Kramnik's king in the centre of the board and the Russian had to give up his right to castle in the middlegame. Kramnik on his part displayed excellent defensive technique with his back to the wall. It was indeed a very resourceful defence that saved the day for him. The peace treaty was signed in 33 moves. The second game between the two lasted only 20 moves. Anand played from the white pieces and faced the Queen's Indian defence that gave Kramnik an easy equality. With the exchange of all the minor pieces eminent, the draw was agreed to. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
