Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands):
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand's aspirations for a third title on the trot suffered a setback after he settled for an easy draw with Judit Polgar of Hungary in the 11th round of the Corus Chess tournament here. The draw did enable the Indian to maintain his joint second position but overnight leader Peter Leko of Hungary made sure that it would be an uphill task for Anand to reach the top spot as he beat Lazaro Bruzon of Cuba to swell his lead to one full point with just two rounds remaining in this category-19 tournament. Anand went for a safety approach against the Hungarian, rated as the world's best women player, to take his tally to 6.5 points from a possible 11. Bulgarian Veslin Topalov tried hard to narrow Leko's lead but in the end had to sign peace with tailender Dutchman Ivan Sokolov and remained in company of Anand and Britain's Michael Adams, all having an identical score. Anand, who had a bad start to the tournament, will now have to go for an all out attack in the remaining two rounds and hope that Leko slips up. As of now Leko appears too determined to let anyone touch him and even in the event of draws in the remaining matches, the Hungarian is likely to win the event. In the 'C' group young IM norm holder Parimarjan Negi yet again made his presence felt with a sparkling victory over Grandmaster Harmen Jonkman of Netherlands. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
