New Delhi:
In a thrilling clash, India's chess prodigy Parimarjan Negi recently took on British GrandMaster Nigel Short in an exhibition match during the Asian Junior Championship in New Delhi. The former World No. 3 and Commonwealth medallist Nigel Short checkmated his current student but said he knew how dominant the 13-year-old could be. "I only started working with him in the summer. He could become the next Vishy Anand, he's done a lot of things so far and I have been very impressed," said Short. The tournament that concluded on Tuesday saw over 80 participants from nine countries vying for the two titles - the Asian Junior and Girls Championship. This edition further proved the dominance of Indian participants as they checkmated their way upto the top of the podium. The tournament did not have the likes of Parimarjan Negi and Tania Sachdev taking part but that didn't take the sheen completely away from the Asian junior championship. GrandMaster Trungson from Vietman won the Asian junior title, while the rest of the podium finishes were taken by Indian juniors. Mary Ann Gomes won the girls title. One could call this a good run, but with just 20 international participants, such a result should have been more than expected. The closing ceremony of this tournament also marked the official launch of Parimarjan's website www.parimarjannegi.com - a move that will further encourage youngters who are contributing to the growing popularity of Chess in India. "More and more younger players are coming up as they are encouraged by the performances of others and many people are coming into it just as a secondary thing while keeping focus on studies," said Negi. The brainstorming continued with Parimarjan and Tania playing with children in a simultaneous display as children aged five and over got their first taste of tough opposition. As for India's preparation for Doha, Tania Sachdev seemed more than confident about the Indian contingent. "Three of our top players are playing, they are coaching with a grandmaster in Chennai. I think they are extremely strong players, there's Harikrishna, there's Humpy and there's Shashikiran so they'll be representing India in the Asian Games so I think it's going to be pretty good," said Tania Sachdev, Woman GrandMaster.Topics mentioned in this article
