Kozhikode:
The World Youth Chess Olympiad is keenly poised at the half-way mark with less-fancied Iran and India 'B' expected to give a tough fight to joint leaders Hungary and China in the sixth round. The encounter between the two top seeds, holders Hungary and China that ended in a 2-2 draw has made things worse for the chasers as none of the other 18 teams in the fray, barring Iran and India 'B', have proved impressive in the tournament so far. While third seed India 'A', the main hope for the hosts, have belied all expectations by failing to strike form, fourth seed Uzbekistan, which has tournament's top-ranking player in Gareev Timur, also sparkled only in patches. After a lethargic start, Iran has sounded alarm bells by going from strength to strength to take the second spot with 13.5 points. However, Iran may soon have to come across some formidable teams in the remaining rounds going by the pairing based on Swiss system that places teams against each other based on their points tally at the end of each round. India 'B', comprising Vijay Keerthi, Pratik R Shriwas, Parimarjan Negi and Praveen Prasad, alone promises to pick up one of the three medals in the offing as it has already played against some formidable teams.
