Here are the statistical highlights of the first day's play between India and South Africa in the first Test in Nagpur.

  • Hashim Amla has posted his second century against India - his 8th in Tests.

  • Five of the eight hundreds have been recorded by Amla in South Africa.

  • In three consecutive innings, Amla has made 95 against England at Cape Town and 75 at Johannesburg, both in the 2009-10 series and 115 not out against India at Nagpur.

  • For the first time in Tests, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lost three consecutive tosses.

  • With his unbeaten hundred - his 25th at number four, Jacques Kallis has emulated Gary Kirsten's feat of three centuries against India. Both now share a South African record for most hundreds against India.

  • Gary Kirsten had posted three centuries against India - a century in each innings (102 & 133) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 1996-97 and 103 at Cape Town in 1996-97.

  • Kallis is the first South African player to register three centuries against India in India, outstripping Gary Kirsten's two centuries.

  • Kallis' aforesaid knock is his highest against India, obliterating the 132 at Ahmedabad in April 2008.

  • Kallis is the first player to amass 1000 runs for South Africa against India - 1043 at an average of 65.18 in 12 Tests, including three hundreds and five fifties.

  • Kallis is also the leading run-getter against India in India, aggregating 716 at an average of 71.60 including three centuries and two fifties in eight Tests.

  • Kallis' tally of 34 hundreds is exceeded only by Sachin Tendulkar (45) and Ricky Ponting (39). Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara have also 34 centuries to their credit in Tests.

  • Kallis has posted 18 centuries at home and 16 overseas.

  • Hashim Amla and Kallis have shared an unbroken stand of 285 for the third wicket - South Africa's highest for any wicket against India apart from the highest for any wicket at VCAS, Jamtha, Nagpur.

  • South Africa's previous best against India was 256 between Kallis and Abraham de Villiers for the fifth wicket at Ahmedabad in 2007-08.

  • The unbroken 285-run stand is now South Africa's fifth highest for the third wicket in Tests - the highest being the 429 (unbroken) between Boeta Dippenaar and Jacques Rudolph against Bangladesh at Chittagong in April 2003.

  • Kallis has equalled Gary Kirsten's distinction of sharing two double century partnerships against India.

  • The 285-run unbroken partnership is the second highest for the third wicket by any pair against India in India - Inzamam-ul-Haq and Younis Khan had put on 324 for Pakistan at Bangalore in 2004-05.
