New Delhi:
The series gets underway from July 18 at Galle.
Sreensanth, who was asked to lead the pace attack in the absence of Zaheer Khan, encountered a knee problem and missed Sunday's practice session. An MRI scan revealed on Monday that he had a ligament tear.
"Sreesanth has sprained a ligament of his left knee, and been advised rest for 3-4 weeks. He will accordingly be returning to India," BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.
However Sreesanth's loss became Munaf's gain after he got a Test recall after more than a year on his 27th birthday.
"Munaf will join the squad at the earliest," Srinivasan added.
Munaf has played 12 Tests so far, his last being the match against New Zealand in Wellington last year.
In Zaheer and Sreesanth's absence Munaf will have to lead the attack with Ishant Sharma. Abhimanyu Mithun was included as Zaheer's replacement.
India are scheduled to play a three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Board President's XI here from Tuesday.
