New Delhi: Former captain of Pakistan, Shahid Afridi, told NDTV on Thursday that he is hurt by the sentencing of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, all of whom were like brothers to him. Although he said that the punishment was necessary, he said that young players are trapped into getting involved in such acts.
Afridi, who was recently included in the national side for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, said that the verdict to send the players to jail will act as a deterrent for other players but it was unfortunate for the trio of Butt, Amir and Asif. "The players were like brothers to me. I have never been approached by a bookie but I know that young players are trapped into it (spot-fixing)," he said adding that spot-fixing was not restricted to Pakistan alone.
Afridi admitted that Pakistan players are not paid well and hinted that this could be a reason for the younger players to give in to temptations. He however added that the Pakistan Cricket Board was doing its best to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future.
