Action in the Toyota University Cricket Championship may be just hotting up and one team which is looking to take the Twenty20 tournament by storm is Kent Northern Stars Jamia Millia Islamia. With two wins in as many matches, Jamia take on the Jaypee Cement Eastern Tigers from Awadesh Pratap Singh University, Rewa in a group B clash at their home ground in New Delhi on Friday.
The boys from Rewa have been slow starters in the competition, losing their lone game so far to Madras University by a massive 41-run margin. The Jamia side is expected to be firm favourites in what looks like a battle of unequals.
Delhi lads have made the headlines for the right reasons, excelling with both bat and ball in the tournament so far. Right-handed batsman Amit Verma has scored 136 runs in two matches and is the second highest run-getter behind Jain University, Bangalore skipper Kaunain Abbas.
Jamia skipper Praveen Yadav, who showed his dancing skills in the opening ceremony alongside Shah Rukh Khan, too has been amongst the runs, scoring 93 runs in the two games with a best of 67 against Mumbai University in the tournament opener at Brabourne Stadium on February 23.
Right-arm medium bowler Abhay Negi and left-arm spinner Deepak Sharma have taken 4 wickets each in their two games, making Delhi a potent bowling force as well.
Rewa players failed to impress much in the opening tie against Chennai, with middle order batsmen Ankit Singh and skipper Naveen Tiwari scoring 41 and 28 runs, respectively. They would be looking for an inspired show in the big game.
Where Jamia would look to continue their winning ways and notch up a third-straight win, Rewa would hope to not repeat their tepid show in the opening game and give the Delhi boys a run for their money.
