Harare: Former Zimbabwe cricket coach Phil Simmons said Thursday he will appeal his deportation order in the Harare High Court in the next few weeks. Simmons was suddenly served a deportation order last Friday. He was told to be out of the country before the end of the day. He engaged lawyer Jonathan Samkange, who stemmed the order temporarily and arranged for an appeal to be heard in the High Court. "I will have to appear in court one day but that's all I know,'' Simmons said. "So I just wait. When that will be I just couldn't say.'' Simmons, a former West Indies Test all-rounder, was national coach for more than a year and, before that, a coach at the academy. He was suddenly replaced as national coach by locally born Kevin Curran six weeks ago during a match against India at Bulawayo. Simmons said he was not informed of the change and was not formally dismissed. He is seeking compensation to cover the remainder of his contract - almost two years. The High Court judges will likely decide whether his work permit expired when he was fired. If they rule against Simmons, he could appeal to the Zimbabwe Supreme Court, with the process taking many months. (AP)
