London:
World champions Australia are ready to reassert their supremacy over world cricket after a two and a half month break. The team has arrived in England for the Ashes series. Australia may have maintained their grip over the Ashes since 1989, but playing a team that has won five Test series in a row means there's a good contest in store for the fans. Geared up "We're all looking forward to it. It's been built up big time already. Also, with us having seven weeks off and a short camp in Brisbane, the guys are very keen to get over here and get things started," said captain Ricky Ponting. The Australians are taking time off this week to visit the battlefields of France on Monday, to pay their respects to the 46,000 Australian and allied servicemen who lost their lives during the World War I. While this trend started with Steve Waugh, the one of Australia always beginning a series as the favourites goes back to almost a decade. 'Cherished battles' "We've always looked forward to and cherished Ashes battles. England have always had very good teams come up against us over the past 20 years," Ponting said. "They probably hadn't played the way they would have liked. But they've certainly achieved a lot of great things over the past two years. Their Test record speaks for itself," he added. Meanwhile, England have a mathematical chance of overtaking Australia as the world number one team, but for that they need to win all five Tests. But first up are the one dayers, and the first Ashes Test begins only on July 21.Topics mentioned in this article
