Sydney:
Australia have defeated World XI by 210 runs in the ICC Super Series Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Having bowled out the Aussies for 199 in the second innings on Sunday, it was no mean task for the world's best batsmen to chase just 355 runs with three days in hand. But the World XI batsmen proved unable to live up to expectations as they succumbed to the Aussie bowlers. In the end, they were bundled out for 144, Stuart MacGill picking up five wickets alone. Wickets tumble After losing two wickets on Sunday, the World XI resumed play today with Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara taking up the run chase. But the Aussie bowlers proved too good for the World XI. Shane Warne picked up two crucial wickets earlier in the morning session on the fourth day. First to go was Dravid (23), caught by Hayden, and then Brian Lara also couldn't last long and fell to Warne, caught behind by Gilchrist. The new man at the crease, Inzamam-ul-Haq also came in for some hard time, and was sent back to the pavilion for a duck by Brett Lee. Andrew Flintoff managed to put 15 runs on the board but was sent back by Stuart MacGill. Mark Boucher also contributed 17, but he too failed to stick on at the crease. The tail enders then failed to put any runs on the board and were dismissed one by one, courtesy some superb bowling by Stuart MacGill. On Day 3, Australia started off on a score of 66 for 1, but the middle order failed to build on the foundation set by Matthew Hayden and captain Ricky Ponting. The Aussies lost two wickets just before lunch, Steve Harmison getting the breakthrough for the World XI. First to go was Hayden (77), bowled by Harmison, and then Michael Clarke departed soon after in similar fashion, for 5. After the lunch break, Muttiah Muralitharan and Andrew Flintoff stepped up the attack ripping through the Aussie middle and lower order. Hayden top scored for the Aussies, followed by Ponting (54) and Justine Langer (22). World XI falter On the second day, the Aussies ended the day at 66 for 1 at stumps after the best batsmen in the world failed to measure up to the Aussie bowling attack. Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill ripped through the World XI batting order as the batsmen struggled against the Aussie bowlers. Replying to the Aussies' first innings score of 345 on the second day, World XI were bowled out for a paltry 190. Openers Graeme Smith and Virender Sehwag started on a fast pace, but the Aussie fast bowlers swept through the top order, setting the tone for the batting collapse. Then Warne and MacGill wrapped up the rest of the wickets. India's Virender Sehwag (76) was the lone batsman to put up any semblance of a fight as he clubbed the Aussies with his trademark punching shots all over the park after the lunch. But his 84-ball innings studded with 14 boundaries ended after Simon Katich at forward short leg caught a blinder off Warne. It was a collapse from then on, with both leg spinners Warne and Stuart MacGill operating in tandem and making life difficult for the World XI batsmen with their turn and bounce. Hayden, Gilchrist power Aus On the first day of the match, a century by Matthew Hayden and an unbeaten 94 by Adam Gilchrist put Australia in the driver's seat. Hayden provided the foundation for the Australian innings scoring 111 off 180 deliveries. After his dismissal, Gilchrist took up the mantle, scoring a quickfire 94 off just 109 balls. At stumps on the first day, Australia were 331 for 6 with Gilchrist (94) and Shane Warne (1) remaining unbeaten.
