Melbourne:
Shane Warne took a wicket with his second ball on return to first-class cricket today after a 12 month ban for a doping offence. The Australian leg-spinner conceded 48 runs and snared one wicket in 10 overs for Victoria in a three-wicket loss to Tasmania in Australia's domestic limited-overs competition. It was Tasmania's first win in nine matches in the competition. Warne had Daniel Marsh adjudged leg-before wicket in his first over, a maiden, as Tasmania slumped to 90 for four chasing 219 to win. His line and length strayed in his later overs as fifth-wicket pair Shane Watson and George Bailey went on the attack. Watson, who belted a driven six off Warne and top-scored with 63, shared a match-winning 94-run stand with Bailey (52 not out) as Tasmania reached 219 for seven with three overs to spare. The one-day match was played in sweltering 41 degrees Celsius heat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Victoria batted first and Warne contributed seven to its total of 218 all out. Warne was suspended last February after testing positive to a banned diuretic in an out-of-competition drug test. He returned from the ban for Victoria's 2nd XI in an interstate match against Queensland Academy last week. He'll get a day off tomorrow before joining Victoria in a domestic four-day match against Tasmania. He's pushing for selection in the Australian Test squad for next month's Test series in Sri Lanka. He hasn't played a Test match since December 2002, but has 491 wickets in 107 Tests and is Australia's leading all-time bowler. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
