A miffed Board of Control for Cricket in India has called a working committee meeting on December 28 in Chennai to take a call on Lalit Modi's return to Indian cricket administration. NDTV has learnt that BCCI bosses will seek the approval of its members to move the Supreme Court against Modi, who is tipped to return as the president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association.
On December 19, Modi contested the RCA presidential elections and according to his supporters, the former Indian Premier League chief is likely to sweep the votes cast by the 33 district units of the state. The elections were supervised by two retired judges appointed by the Supreme Court and the results are expected on January 6.
The judges allowed Modi to contest because the RCA elections are governed by the Rajasthan Sports Act 2005 and not by BCCI's rules for its units. The BCCI had threatened RCA with dire consequences if it allowed Modi to contest and come back to power. But the judges overruled BCCI's diktats and allowed the Modi group to contest. Modi represented the Nagaur District Cricket Association. Modi contested against Bhilwara District Cricket Association's Rampal Sharma, who is believed to be close to incumbent president CP Joshi, a Congress heavyweight. Joshi did not contest this time.
Modi has been banned for life by the BCCI for wrongdoings as IPL chief. According to the Board, Modi cannot hold any post in BCCI affiliated unit like RCA.
