Port Of Spain:
Rain forced the abandonment of the second one-day match between West Indies and England after 16 overs on Saturday. West Indies were 57 for two with Ramnaresh Sarwan not out on 11 and Ricardo Powell not out on eight when the rain that has been lashing the twin-island state of Trinidad and Tobago for the last few days arrived. Several parts of the outfield were underwater when umpires Darrell Hair of Australia and Billy Doctrove of Dominica made the decision to call off play for the day around 5 pm (2230 IST). Damp conditions delayed the start by an hour with the umpires concerned about the bowlers' run-up at the Queen's Park Cricket Club End. They inspected around 1:30 pm and were satisfied that the conditions had improved enough. The overs were reduced with each side allotted a maximum of 46. Steve Harmison, whose stock has risen on this visit to the Caribbean, exploited the conditions to maximum effect and made the breakthrough when West Indies left-hander Shivanrine Chanderpaul, opening the innings, was caught behind for three with the last ball of the eighth over. James Anderson, the forgotten man of England cricket in recent weeks, struck with his third ball when Chris Gayle was caught at point for 20 in the 11th over before the rain came.
