London:
In a major setback to world's highest test wicket taker Muttiah Muralitharan, the International Cricket Council has backed a decision by the Sri Lankan cricket board to prevent him from bowling the controversial 'doosra' delivery. "The report forwarded by Sri Lanka Cricket proves that the degree of straightening is well outside the ICC's specified levels of tolerance," ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said here yesterday. "In light of this finding, Sri Lanka Cricket has now advised the ICC that it has instructed Muralitharan not to bowl this delivery in international cricket. The ICC supports this action," he said. The blow came three days after he became world's highest test wicket taker by crossing a record of 519 by West Indian paceman Courtney Walsh, against Zimbabwe in Harare. Speed said, after being forwarded a copy of the Sri Lankan Cricket report compiled by the University of Western Australia, the ICC had discussed its finding that 'doosra' delivery was against the laws of the game with Lankan cricket. The controversy over Murali's action relates mostly to 'doosra', a delivery that spins away from a right-hander. The report showed an initial straightening of the arm of around 14 degrees which after some remedial work was reduced to 10 degrees. This compares to an allowable level of tolerance for spinners of five degrees under the ICC laws. However, the Sri Lankan board has told the ICC that it will be seeking to have these regulations changed at the earliest, Speed said. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
