In a scathing attack, Bedi had criticised Murali for taking advantage of his physical deformity and accused the ICC of creating a monster, by allowing him to continue bowling.
The Lankan law firm that will be representing Murali say that they will be writing a letter to Bedi and will drag him to court if needed. The Sri Lankan cricket board have already announced their intention to support Murali.
Sri Lanka's off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan has hired the services of Pearl Island's leading lawyers to file a defamation case against India's former Test cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi who in his recent 'vituperative outburst' had said that Muralitharan was taking advantage of his physical deformity and that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had 'created a monster' by allowing him to continue to bowl.
Muralitharan's manager Kushil Gunasekhara had a series of meetings on Sunday with a law firm representative Sudath Perera. Confirming it over his mobile phone, Sudath Perera said: "We are writing a letter to Bedi and if needed, he will be dragged into a court of law". Sudath Perera Associates will also work with Colombo's leading lawyers Romesh De Silva and Dinal Phillips.
Sudath Perera Associates is a full service law firm, offering sophisticated advocacy, representation, advice and solutions to a broad range of clients.
Though the firm was only founded in 2002, its team of well-seasoned professionals and unique delivery of services has established its pre-eminence among the Sri Lanka's top law firms.
It has reportedly been the preferred law firm in the country for handling high profile cases on behalf of both the private and public sector.
"We were also the consultant lawyers for Arjuna Ranatunga when he was being deprived of his human rights to contest the elections," Sudath Perera said. "Bishen has always written very degrading articles calling Murali a cheat and all that stuff. We have taken serious note of this and are filing a case against him."
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has also said such remarks were intended to 'harm the bowler's reputation and achievements.' Murali is getting support from his board but the lawyers will file an independent case against Bedi without involving the Indian Cricket Board.
