Sydney:
Exiled Zimbabwean cricketer Henry Olonga has backed calls for Australian team to call off its tour of Zimbabwe and urged the International Cricket Council to "avoid a farce" if they were to retain any credibility. "I would imagine that if the ICC is to avoid a farce, and if the ICC is going to have any credibility, they are going to call this tour off," Olonga was quoted as saying in The Age today. Zimbabwean cricket has plunged into a crisis after 15 senior players went on strike to protest the sacking of Heath Streak as captain as well as the racially biased selection policy of the national board. The Zimbabwe Cricket Union reacted by terminating the contracts of the players, all white, resulting in a second string team being pasted by Sri Lanka in the two-Test series. Since then, voices have grown asking the three-time world champions Australia to return home in order to preserve the integrity of cricket which was being damaged by lop sided contests. The ICC has called for an emergency meeting of its Executive Board in London on Friday to decide whether the matches to be played should be stripped of Tests status.
