Lord's:
Former captain Nasser Hussain's 14th Test century guided England to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's on Monday. Hussain scored an unbeaten 103 in England's total of 282 for three, which gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Though the hosts lost two early wickets in Marcus Trescothick for two and Mark Butcher for six, Hussain was involved in two big partnerships. Strauss misses milestone Andrew Strauss and Hussain added 108 runs for the third wicket. Going for a needless run, Hussain led to Strauss being run out on 83. Had Strauss scored a hundred, he would have become only the third batsman to score a century in both innings of a debut Test match. Strauss made 112 in the first innings. Hussain and Graham Thorpe added 139 runs for an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership. Thorpe was 51 not out, his 35th Test half-century. New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat making 386 in the first innings. In reply, England made 441 taking a lead of 55 runs. In their second innings, the Kiwis hit 336 runs setting England a victory target of 282 runs.Topics mentioned in this article
