The last and only time that South Africa lost 10 straight matches was under Keppler Wessels' captaincy and the past came to haunt them once again when they lost their 10th straight match to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka who were sent into bat first lost an early wicket of Avishka Gunawardene in the third ball of the match. But Sanath Jayasuriya and Saman Jayantha put on a quick 124 runs partnership for the third wicket. Jayasuriya was in top form as he scored 79 off 85 balls. Kumar Sangakkara, who was later adjudged the man of the series, made 72 to take the Lankans past the 300 mark. Herschelle Gibbs's poor form continued and without a good start the proteas were never in the race. He was out for six with the total score reading 11. Kallis and Rudolph gave their team a semblance of a chance with their 114 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. But Jayasuriya and Upul Chandana kept a check on the scoring rate and the visitors kept losing wickets. Chandana took five wickets conceding 61 runs as South Africa were all out for 259 runs. Chandana was named the man of the match.
