Dhaka:
Daniel Vettori took six wickets as New Zealand revelled in yet another victory over Bangladesh after clinching the opening cricket Test by an innings and 99 runs in Dhaka. Bangladesh, who were trailing by 225 runs, were all out for 126 in their second innings on the fourth day. This was their 28th defeat in 31 matches ever since they were granted Test status four years ago. The other three matches were drawn. For New Zealand, this was the third-in-a-row win as they needed just 33.5 overs to claim the last eight wickets after the hosts had resumed at 41-2. New Zealand had won the previous two Tests against Bangladesh by an innings margin at home in 2001. Left-arm spinner Vettori and off-spinner Paul Wiseman (3-64) gave Bangladesh a tough time with their turn and bounce on a turning track. Bangladesh collapsed with the loss of their last seven wickets for 39 runs. Vettori finished with 6-28, his eighth haul of five or more wickets in a Test innings in 56 matches. New Zealand had not won a Test series since 2001. "It is nice to return to winning ways. It was a comprehensive victory. We batted well in the first innings, especially Brendon McCullum who played an outstanding knock," said skipper Stephen Fleming. Wicket-keeper McCullum, with his impressive 143 for his maiden Test century and six catches, was named man of the match. (With wire inputs)Topics mentioned in this article
