London:
Intermittent showers interrupted play in the Group B league match between South Africa and West Indies in the ICC Champions Trophy today. The match has been officially called off and has been moved to the reserve day. Chasing 247 for victory, the West Indian openers faced just six overs of their run-chase. There was a brief shower immediately after the South African innings, but play got under way without any reduction of overs. Chris Gayle smacked two fours in the time available and raced along to 12 off just 13 balls. West Indies were 20 for 0 when another spell of showers came down. Gibbs shines Earlier, a smashing century by Herschelles Gibbs powered South Africa to 246 for 6 after West Indies won the toss and put South Africa in to bat. West Indies have made three changes to their side. Ricardo Powell, Ryan Hinds and Corey Collymore have replaced Sylvester Joseph, Darren Sammy and Merv Dillon. The Proteas, however, have stuck to the same side that beat Bangladesh in their last game. Today's winner will move on to the semi-finals, where they will meet either India or Pakistan. Proteas have edge Though statistics are heavily in favour of South Africa, the morale of the men from the Caribbean is high after their win over Bangaldesh. But West Indies captain Brian Lara is aware that that victory came easy with opponents Bangladesh hardly offering much of a struggle. South Africa, though, are a different team altogether. The Proteas certainly have an edge over the West Indies in terms of numbers. Of the 32 matches that the two have played so far, the Proteas have won 21, while the Windies have been victorious in just 10.The two sides, however, have never played each other in England before. South Africa had come into the Champions Trophy on the back of a record equalling low of 10 consecutive one-day defeats. The losing streak was only halted with a 9-wicket victory over Bangladesh.
