Sydney:
Former Australia captain and highly regarded cricket commentator Richie Benaud named his World XI of the 20th century. The Aussie leg spinner named four Australians in his side, two each from India, West Indies and England, and one from Pakistan. According to his list, England's Jack Hobbs and India's Sunil Gavaskar should open the innings with Don Bradman coming at number three. Then comes Sachin Tendulkar followed by West Indies "master blaster" Vivian Richards. Imran Khan of Pakistan and Garfield Sobers of West Indies are the all rounders. Current Australian wicket-keeper/batsman Adam Gilchrist comes in next and his fellow teammate Shane Warne fills up the slow bowler's slot. The new ball is to be shared between England's Sydney Barnes and Australia's Dennis Lillee, with Imran Khan and Gary Sobers to help them out. However, Sri Lanka's world record Test wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan and New Zealand's leading wicket-taker Richard Hadlee do not figure in his list. Benaud is the chairman of a five-man selection panel for next month's ICC World XI One-Day International and World XI Test teams of the year, to be named next month in London.Topics mentioned in this article
