Mumbai:Australian Captain Ricky Ponting began his training today. Ponting has been ruled out of the third test match, but should be fit to play in the final game in Mumbai. The Skipper had suffered a thumb injury that had kept him out of the first three games of the series. Ponting has hardly had any success with the bat in Test matches in India. Though he'll have just two innings in the final game in Mumbai to prove himself in this series, he hopes he is able to improve on his record. Better plans "I was looking forward to coming here after a pretty ordinary tour in 2001 with the bat. I guess what made it more frustrating for me is that now I may only get to play in the one Test match. I wanted to come and play a big part in the series as a batsman and as Captain as well," he said. Though the Aussies were close to a series victory in 2001, they have not won a series in India for over thirty years. But recently they have had success in the subcontinent. Ricky Ponting led his team to a series win in Sri Lanka earlier this year, and the Skipper says these experiences of playing more cricket in the subcontinent has helped them plan better and differently for this series. "The guys have stuck to their plans well and have been disciplined in everything that they've done with batting and bowling. You'll probably see some different fields set this time than you have seen in the past but its all worked for us and it goes down to our preparation and the success we've had in the subcontinent of late," he said. Ponting begins training with his team in Nagpur, and while the skipper will not play the Nagpur Test, he is hoping that his team does manage to win so that he'll be under less pressure in Mumbai.
