Chennai:Darren Lehmann who averages 49.30 says that he's willing to step down for Michael Clarke, who's played just one Test match. The 34 year old made that announcement pre-empting talk that he will have to make way for Michael Clarke once Ricky Ponting returns to that team. The future star In the convincing win for Australia in the Bangalore Test against India, 23 year old Michael Clarke proved just why he's considered one of the future stars of the game. His 151 in the first innings earned him the man of the match award, but it might well have lost Darren Lehmann his place in the side. Lehmann the stand in vice-captain in this series however turned around all the criticism of his batting in the Bangalore test by volunteering to step out of the contest, though his stand-in captain stood up for him. Team player Lehmann is currently averaging just under 50 in Test cricket and though he played a pivotal role in Australia's 3-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka, his place in under threat because he turns 35 next year. So a tough call for the Australian selectors who are well aware of criticism that their team has too few players who are in their 20s. The selectors aren't looking for popularity but Lehmann has certainly boosted his by offering to make a sacrifice in the interest of his team.
