To have an eight team IPL is a clear consensus that emerged out of the meeting of the IPL Working group and the league's stakeholders over the last one week. But which teams will fill the seventh and the eighth slots still remains a big mystery. While the Lodha Committee report came down heavily onChennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the BCCI does not seem to be in a mood to take that punishment a step further by terminating the two teams.
A member of the Working Group has told NDTV," We are not exploring the termination route till now; looking at other possibilities, like having institutions or corporates running the franchises for two years."
However, for that to happen, CSK has to come clean of the conflict of interest issue. NDTV has learnt that it is for this reason that the promoters of the team transferred their shares to non-promoters as far back as September 2014. The transfer of power was approved by the BCCI's powers that be in a meeting in February but was challenged by Jyotiraditya Scindia in a meeting in April. Following this, the BCCI sought legal opinion on CSK's status, and the franchise too took its case to former Chief Justice of India, SH Kapadia.
NDTV has learnt that CSK is bracing itself to challenge the Lodha order in the high court. That could happen as early as this week. If they get a clearance from the court then BCCI will have to re-admit CSK
The Board will have a clear draft on IPL's future when the Governing Council meets in Mumbai on 29th August.
