New Delhi:
Yuvraj Singh has been named the vice captain for the Australia series while Virender Sehwag has still not been given a chance for first three one-dayers.
Dhoni is now the newly appointed captain of the Indian One-day team in place of Rahul Dravid. He will lead India in twelve One-day matches at home against Australia and Pakistan.
Earlier on Friday when the BCCI announced Rahul Dravid's intention of not captaining India again, almost everyone knew who would be the obvious choice. And that choice was simply Sachin Tendulkar.
But three days later, selectors' verdict was something else. Dhoni emerged as the man who could take India to the next level. And he was accordingly named the captain of the One-day home series against Australia and Pakistan in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Incidentally, two days ahead of the selection meeting, Dilip Vengsarkar was very categorical about what he wanted from a captain "who needs to be both young and experienced."
Fortunately for Dhoni, everything fell in place and most importantly, his decision to induct his slow bowlers at a bowl out match against Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup did a world of good to his chance of becoming the new One-day captain.
In the end, the selectors were convinced about his ability to take decision in pressure situation.
Meanwhile, a senior Indian cricketer told NDTV that Dhoni was made vice-captain for the England One-day series in order to make sure that he is ready for the future events.
According to that cricketer, time has come to support him and make a winning combination now.
As expected the selectors have given a stamp of authority to Irfan Pathan's match-fitness.
The left-arm seamer is now part of the squad along with Harbhajan Singh.
Team: MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Robin Uthappa, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Piyush Chawla, Romesh Pawar, R P Singh, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh, Saurav Ganguly.
Great moment
Dhoni's name was finalised after Sachin Tendulkar, who was believed to be the selector's first choice, apparently declined the offer to lead the team.
Dhoni might have his own share of critics, but there are many who feel his brand of cricket and his character are very well suited for captaincy.
More than his skills what has impressed his predecessors, like former Indian wicket keeper Farokh Engineer, is the Jharkhand lad's character.
Reacting to the news, Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda said he was delighted about Dhoni captaining the team.
"If Dhoni becomes ODI captain it will be a great moment for Jharkhand," he said.
The 26-year-old, who made his international debut for India in 2004, is currently captaining the Indian Twenty20 Team in South Africa.
His first official job as India's ODI captain will be the seven match ODI series against Australia later this month.
