Ahmedabad:Riding on a brilliant knock by middle order batsman Suresh Raina, India Blue made 246 in 49.3 overs against India Red in the first match of N K P Salve Challenger Trophy at Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera.
Coming back from a knee injury which forced him out of Indian squad in January this year, Raina made full use of the opportunity to prove his fitness before the crucial home series against Pakistan.
Raina hit 92 off just 100 balls (2x6, 7x4) to rescue India Blue, who decided to bat first and were reduced to 41/4 in the 12th over.
He stitched a 87-run partnership with Neeraj Patel (35) for the fifth wicket and posed a 49-run partnership with Joginder Sharma (27).
India Blue skipper Virender Sehwag, who opened with A Rahane, once again failed with the bat.
Sehwag made just 9 runs off the 19 balls before becoming the second victim of Uttar Pradesh medium pacer Praveen Kumar.
Earlier, Kumar had clean bowled Rahane (0) on the very first ball of the match.
He then went on to pick the wicket of Dinesh Karthick (0), who was trapped before the stumps, to leave India Blue tottering at 23 for 3 wickets in the seventh over.
First change bowler Siddharth Trivedi claimed the wicket of Swapnil Asnodkar (19) to push the rivals further on the back foot.
For India Red, Kumar was the most successful bowler scalping four for 42. Trivedi got three for 52.
