Meerut:
The unknown pushed into instant stardom, as team India celebrated one of its biggest victories, Praveen Kumar was the unlikely hero.
The medium pacer turned around a match that could have gone either way. Stunning wickets that earned 21-year-old Praveen the man of the match title and high praise from the rivals.
"Praveen Kumar came good in the last couple of games," said Ricky Ponting, captain, Australia.
Celebrations in Brisbane, matched the joy back in Praveen's hometown Meerut, where he is the odd one out in a family of wrestlers.
"It has always happened that whenever I watch TV, Praveen does not take wickets. So, I stood outside while the match was on," said Praveen's brother.
Praveen refused to become a wrestler and started his cricket career in the Uttar Pradesh under-19 team with RP Singh and Suresh Raina.
He debuted on the international pitch only last year in the final match of the ODI series against Pakistan.
In 25 first class matches Praveen has claimed 126 wickets at an average of 21.50. He also has 945 runs to his credit.
Now he has earned his place in the sun, with the likes of Sachin and Dhoni.
