  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the 31st Test captain for India. He is the first wicketkeeper to captain India in a Test match.

  • Piyush Chawla, who made his Test debut against England 25 months ago in March 2006, is playing in his second Test match.

  • Chawla (2/66) registered his best bowling performance in Tests, bettering his 1 for 8 against England at Mohali in 2006.

  • Neil McKenzie and Graeme Smith became the first South African opening pair to post six successive 50-plus stands in Test cricket - 52 against Bangladesh at Mirpur; 415 at Chittagong; 132 & 53 against India at Chepauk; 78 at Ahmedabad and 61 at Kanpur.

  • McKenzie-Smith pair is the first South African opening pair to register four successive 50-plus partnerships against India.

  • McKenzie became the first South African to aggregate 300 runs in the series - 327 at an average of 109.00, including one century and one fifty. In terms of run-aggregate, this is his best ever Test series, eclipsing his previous best against West Indies in 2000-01 - 301 (ave.33.44) in 5 Tests.

  • McKenzie's aggregate is now a new Test record for South Africa against India in a Test series, bettering Gary Kirsten's aggregate of 322 (ave.53.66) in 3 Tests in 1996-97.

  • Graeme Smith, when on four, surpassed Brian Lara's aggregate of 4685 (ave.57.84) in 47 Tests as Captain.

  • Smith's aggregate of 4751 (ave.47.98) in 58 Tests as captain, is the fourth in the all-time list of most runs as Captain. Australia's Allan Border (6623) holds the record, followed by West Indian, Clive Lloyd (5233) and New Zealand's Stephen Fleming (5156).

  • Smith's 69 is his sixth fifty against India - his 22nd overall.

  • Smith's innings is the highest by a South African captain at Green Park, surpassing Hansie Cronje's 50 in 1996-97.

  • Smith and Amla put on 91, a South African record for the second wicket at Kanpur, outstripping the 39 between Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs in 1996-97.

  • Amla's 8th fifty is his third against India.

  • Amla became the second South African to aggregate 300 runs in the series against India - 307 at an average of 76.75, including one century and two fifties.

  • Graeme Smith's wicket is Yuvaj's first against South Africa - his fourth overall. His first three wickets in Test Cricket were Pakistani batsmen.

  • Ishant Sharma (3/55) produced his second best bowling performance - his best is 5 for 118 against Pakistan at Bangalore in December 2007.
