Kolkata:
"I cannot understand the necessity of cheergirls at the IPL matches. I am not against any new concept, but Kolkatans are not yet ready for cheergirls," West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty told reporters at the Writer's Building - the seat of the West Bengal government.
"I personally do not support this kind of westernisation in the name of entertainment," he said.
On being asked if there will be no cheerleaders at the April 29 IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens here, Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty told IANS: "So far, we have not received any orders to ban cheerleaders in the April 29 match at Edens ground."
"Besides, we cannot stop them from entering the stadium, they are not criminals. The decision on this issue is to be taken by the IPL authorities and the government," he added.
