Sri Lanka on Tuesday appointed former batsman Charith Senanayake as the manager of their cricket team ahead of the Test series against India starting Wednesday after rejecting ex-captain Hashan Tillakaratne for the job.

The three-match Test series against India starts Wednesday.

Announcing Senanyake's appointment, Sri Lanka Cricket media manager Shane Fernando said the decision has been ratified by sports minister Gamini Lokuge.

Lokuge had yesterday rejected Tillakaratne's nomination from Sri Lanka Cricket, saying the former captain could not be considered due to his active involvement in politics.

Senanayake played three Tests and seven ODIs as an opening batsman.
