Mumbai:
Dravid flopped in both the innings of the first Test at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, raising a big question mark about his place in the team, following his horrendous run against Australia in the last Test series won by India 2-0.
Former Test captain and ex-selection panel chief Dilip Vengsarkar today said it was up to the star batsman to decide when to quit while adding that it would be good if he takes a break to recapture his form.
"Rahul is a great batsman but his bad phase has gone on for a long time now. He needs a break. He can play a few first class games, recapture his form and then can be brought back," the former middle order batsman said.
Asked whether it was time for Dravid to quit, Vengsarkar said it was entirely up to the player to take a call.
"He's a great player. It's up to him. He knows when to quit," he said.
Already two stalwarts from the Fab Five in the Team of the 1990s - Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly - have called it a day and pressure is mounting on Dravid to perform quickly or perish.
Vengsarkar was also not too happy with the bowling display of Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh on the helpful track in Chennai.
"I was not happy with the way he bowled in the match. There was bounce and turn and he could have bowled better," the former India captain said.
Harbhajan, who is the world's second-most successful off spinner in Tests after Sri Lanka's Muthiah Muralitharan with over 300 scalps under his belt, grabbed 3 for 96 and 1 for 91 in the two England innings in the match.
In the euphoria over India's best-ever Test run-chase in the sub-continent against England in the opening match on Monday, the continued poor form Rahul Dravid has grabbed attention.
